On June 22, 1963, a future wrestling legend was born in Vancouver, Canada. John Anthony Tenta Jr., better known by his ring names Earthquake and Typhoon, left an unforgettable mark on the sport of professional wrestling. His towering frame and devastating finishing move, the Earthquake Splash, earned him a place among the most feared heels of the 1990s. But beyond his intimidating persona, Tenta was also a highly skilled athlete with a deep passion for his craft.

Early Life and Sumo Career

Tenta's journey to wrestling began in the world of sumo. As a teenager, he traveled to Japan and trained under the legendary yokozuna Chiyonofuji Mitsugu. Tenta quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the first non-Japanese to win a major sumo tournament in 1985. His success in sumo caught the attention of wrestling promoters, including WWF President Vince McMahon.

WWF Career: Earthquake and Typhoon

In 1989, Tenta signed with the WWF and made his debut as Earthquake. With his massive frame and menacing demeanor, Earthquake quickly became a force to be reckoned with. He teamed up with Jimmy Hart as his manager and feuded with some of the biggest names in the company, including Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior. In 1990, Tenta won the WWF Tag Team Championship with Dino Bravo, solidifying his status as a top heel.

After leaving the WWF, Tenta wrestled in WCW under the name Typhoon. He continued to be a dominant force, winning the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship twice. However, his second stint in the major leagues was cut short due to health issues.

Later Career and Death

In 1999, Tenta returned to the WWF, this time as the more sympathetic character John Tenta. He found success in the later stages of his career, winning the WWF Hardcore Championship twice. However, his health issues continued to plague him, and he officially retired from wrestling in 2004.

Sadly, John Tenta passed away on June 7, 2006, at the age of 42, due to bladder cancer. His untimely death shocked the wrestling world and left a void in the hearts of fans. Tenta's legacy lives on as one of the most memorable and respected wrestlers of all time.
