USWNT Cruises Past Mexico in Pre-Olympic Friendly
Smith's Second-Half Goal Secures Victory
The United States Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) closed out their pre-Olympic tune-up with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mexico on Thursday night. Sophia Smith's second-half goal proved to be the difference, as the USWNT maintained their unbeaten streak and extended their record to 8W-1L-2D on the year.
Smith's Moment
The match was a close affair throughout, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the net. In the 52nd minute, however, Smith broke the deadlock with a clinical strike from inside the box. The Portland Thorns forward received a pass from Lindsey Horan and unleashed a powerful shot that flew into the bottom corner.
USWNT's Dominance
Despite Mexico's spirited performance, the USWNT controlled the majority of the game. They possessed the ball for 62% of the time and created numerous scoring opportunities. Mexico goalkeeper Emily Alvarado made several impressive saves to keep her team in the game, but Smith's goal ultimately proved too much to overcome.
Pre-Olympic Confidence
The victory provides the USWNT with a much-needed confidence boost heading into the Olympics. The team will face Sweden, New Zealand, and Australia in Group G and will be looking to reach the podium for the fifth time in six Games.
